What is Avg File Shredder?

File Shredder is also known as Data Shredder. It is a feature in AVG Internet Security software that allows you to erase the files or folders permanently on your hard drive or computer. Once you shred your files using the AVG File Shredder, you cannot restore them. Besides, no one can misuse your data when you sell or donate your computer.

Downloading the AVG Antivirus software allows you to access the AVG Shredder feature. To download the AVG Antivirus or AVG Internet Security software, follow these steps.

  • On your Windows computer, open the default browser and navigate to the official AVG site.
  • Search for AVG Internet Security that supports your Windows OS.
  • Locate it and click the Download button beside the installer file.
  • Wait until the download is completed.
  • Next, go to the Downloads folder and double-click the downloaded AVG installer file to run the installation wizard.

  • Before installing the AVG Internet Security software on your Windows computer, check whether you have disabled the Windows Defender antivirus.
  • Open to the Downloads folder and locate the AVG setup file.
  • Give a right-click on it and select the Run as administrator option.
  • If the User Account Control window pops-up, click the Yes button.
  • In the AVG Internet Security Setup window, click the Install button.
  • Wait for the AVG setup to install the AVG Internet Security software on your computer.
  • Click Continue and activate your product using the activation key sent to your email address when you have downloaded the premium package.
  • Otherwise, activate the free trial.
  • Once installed, click the Run First Scan button to start scanning your computer for any virus-infected files.
  • Make sure that the File Shredder feature is enabled on your AVG Antivirus software.

Avg Shredder Access Rights

When the AVG File Shredder cannot access certain files, an error message will appear on the screen stating that you have insufficient access rights. To fix this issue, make sure that you have logged in with administrator rights on your Windows computer. Delete some files manually and then use File Shredder to shred the contents of the Recycle Bin. Ensure that you are not using the hard drives configured in RAID. Also, make sure that you are not using the SSD on Windows 7 OS or earlier. If the problem persists, boot your Windows computer in Safe mode and run the shred your files or folders using the AVG Shredder.

  • You can access the AVG File Shredder settings from the AVG Internet Security software.
  • To do so, launch the AVG Internet Security software on your Windows computer.
  • Click the Menu button and select Data Shredder .
  • Under Data Shredder, you can select File Shredder, Drive Shredder, or Deleted Files Shredder.
  • Click the Select Files button above Files Shredder.
  • Select your files and click the OK button.
  • Next, click the Shred All button to irreversibly shred the selected files.
  • If prompted, select the Yes, Shred It option to confirm your action.

Troubleshoot - Avg Shredder Not Working

When your AVG file Shredder fails to work, check whether you have given access rights to shred your computer files. In such cases, delete a file manually and use the File Shredder feature to shred the files in Recycle Bin. Ensure that you have logged in with administrator rights on your Windows computer. If the Shred using AVG option is not available in the context menu, ensure that you have not connected the hard drives configured in RAID. Also, ensure that you are not using SSDs on the Windows 7 OS or earlier version. Doing so will fix the AVG Shredder problems.
