Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection

Windows Defender ATP is an end-point tool protection tool that helps you detect, investigate, prevent, and respond to advanced threats present on your Windows computer. You can use this tool to protect the following operating systems: Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise, Windows 7 SP1 Pro, Windows 8.1 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 10, Windows server: 2008, 2012 R2, 2016, version 1803 or later, and 2019.

Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection
  • You can download the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection tool from the official site of Microsoft.
  • Go to Microsoft’s Download Center and search for Windows Defender Advanced Threat-Protection (ATP).
  • Click the Download button.
  • Now, the Windows Defender ATP installer will be download.
  • After downloading the installer, begin to install the tool on your Windows computer.

Setup Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection

Once the Windows Defender ATP installer has been downloaded, you can begin the installation on your Windows computer. The setup process of Windows Defender ATP on the Windows 7 and 10 computers are discussed below in detail. Read and use it to set up the ATP tool.

Setup Windows Defender Atp Windows 7

  • Open the Windows Defender ATP installer file on your Windows 7 computer.
  • In the Welcome window, click the Next button.
  • Now, a window with the Select the data storage location message will open. Select your location and click Next.
  • Choose the data retention policy option as per your desire from the drop-down menu.
  • Similarly, select your organization size from the drop-down menu and click Next.
  • Follow the prompts displayed in the installation wizard.
  • Enable the Preview experience option when prompted.
  • Next, a pop-up dialog box titled Create your cloud instance will appear on the screen.
  • Click the Continue button.
  • Now, the process for creating your Windows Defender ATP Cloud instance will begin. Wait for it to complete.
  • Once the cloud instance has been created, follow the instructions displayed on the screen to complete the remaining setup process.

Windows 10 Defender Advanced Threat Protection

  • First, download the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection installer file for Windows 10 computer from Microsoft’s Download Center.
  • After downloading, open the installer files to initiate the installation process.
  • The installation procedure of Windows Defender ATP n on Windows 7 and 10 computers are quite similar.
  • Refer to the installation instructions given in the Windows 7 section and perform the same.

Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection Service Failed To Stop Running

  • If the Windows Defender ATP service stops responding unexpectedly, then try some of the troubleshooting instructions given here to fix it.
  • Check if there is a Restart Now button provided below the Windows Defender ATP service.
  • If yes, click it, and wait for sometimes.
  • If a dialog box with the error message ’Unexpected error. Sorry, we ran into a problem. Please try again.’ appears on the screen, click Close.
  • Open the Run application on your Windows computer.
  • Type the regedit command and click OK.
  • This will open the Registry Editor window.
  • Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder followed by Software.
  • Scroll down the Software folder and search for Policies.
  • In the Policies section, expand the Microsoft folder followed by Windows Defender.
  • Now, the Disable Anti-Spyware option will be displayed on the screen.
  • Check if the Windows Defender service has been disabled by Anti-Spyware.
  • You can check it by the data mentioned beside it. If you find 1, that means the Anti-Spyware is disabled.
  • If it is 0, then it is not disabled.
  • Now, double-click on the Disable Anti-Spyware option and change the value to 0 and click the OK button.
  • Go to Windows Defender Security Center and click the Restart now button beside the ATP file.
  • Check if the issue has been resolved.
  • If yes, you will find a tick mark near the ATP icon.

Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection Service Access Is Denied

  • If the credentials that you have entered are wrong, then there is a chance for your access to be denied.
  • Enter the credentials correctly and then check if you could access the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection Service.
  • If not, check if you have selected the correct location while installing the ATP tool on your Windows computer.
  • Check if you have entered the data correctly.
  • If not, enter the information correctly, and then check if the ATP service access denied issue is resolved.
